      Within the broad boundaries of the Momence Wetlands Planning Unit, the most important areas for wildlife are the existing bottomland forests and wet meadows that experience periodic flooding and are concentrated along the Kankakee River channel. These are our first priority to work with others on conservation action. Mitsch. Description: As evidenced by the historic record of Burt E. Burrough's book entitled Tales of an Old Border Town and along the Kankakee (), the city of Momence owes its origins to the flow of the Kankakee River through eastern Kankakee County.

This diverse tributary linked marshy areas in Indiana to the adjacent fertile fields on the. It flows for 59 miles through Illinois before it confluences with the Des Plaines, where it becomes the Illinois River. There are three dams on the Kankakee in Illinois: at Momence, Kankakee, and Wilmington.

The section of the river between the state line and Momence is surrounded by the Momence Wetlands, characterized by timber and relatively. The Kankakee River ([ˌkæŋkəˈki]) is a tributary of the Illinois River, approximately miles ( km) long, in the Central Corn Belt Plains of northwestern Indiana and northeastern Illinois in the United States.

At one time, the river drained one of the largest wetlands in North America and furnished a significant portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.
